Why do we need enzymes to digest food? Can't our stomach acid just break everything down by itself?

Answer

We absolutely need enzymes for digestion because they are biological catalysts that significantly speed up the breakdown of complex food molecules into simpler, absorbable forms. While stomach acid (hydrochloric acid) plays a crucial role by creating an acidic environment, killing some microbes, and denaturing proteins, it cannot efficiently break down large molecules like carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into their basic units (e.g., glucose, amino acids, fatty acids). Enzymes are highly specific; for example, amylase breaks down starch, pepsin breaks down proteins, and lipase breaks down fats. Without these specific enzymes, the digestive process would be extremely slow, inefficient, and incomplete, meaning our body wouldn't be able to absorb the necessary nutrients from the food we eat.
