Why is excretion so important for us? What would happen if our kidneys stopped working properly?

Answer

Excretion is incredibly important because our body's metabolic processes constantly produce waste products that are toxic if allowed to accumulate. For example, the breakdown of proteins generates urea, a harmful substance. If our kidneys, the primary excretory organs, stopped working properly, these toxic wastes would build up in the blood. This accumulation would disrupt the normal functioning of cells and organs, alter the body's pH balance, and eventually lead to severe health issues like kidney failure, uremia, and even death. Excretion is essential for maintaining homeostasis – the stable internal environment necessary for all life processes to function optimally. It's our body's way of cleaning itself from within.
